Argentina–UK Energy Trade Mission, March 2025
Mar 23, 2025Argentina–UK Energy Trade Mission, March 2025
From 2 to 5 March 2025, London became the setting for one of the most significant bilateral energy dialogues in recent memory. The British Argentine Chamber of Commerce (BACC) and BritCham Argentina jointly organised the Argentina–UK Energy Trade Mission, a four-day programme that brought together Argentine provincial governors, senior diplomats, leading British and Argentine companies, and international investors to explore the full breadth of Argentina's energy opportunity.
A High-Level Delegation
The public delegation was led by two of Argentina's most prominent regional figures: Rolando Figueroa, Governor of Neuquén, and Alberto Weretilneck, Governor of Río Negro — both provinces at the heart of Argentina's energy transformation. They were joined by Argentine Ambassador to the UK Mariana Plaza, British Ambassador to Argentina Kirsty Hayes, and senior representatives from Pan American Energy, Harbour Energy, BP, KPMG, PUENTE, and Fastmarkets, among others.
Monday 3 March: Opening at the Argentine Residence
The mission opened with a welcome breakfast at the Official Residence of the Argentine Ambassador at 49 Belgrave Square, co-chaired by BACC Chairman Javier Álvarez and BritCham President Gonzalo Ketelhohn. Both governors presented Argentina's energy agenda directly to an audience of British private sector representatives, followed by a working session to identify the priorities and opportunities most relevant to the bilateral energy relationship. A formal lunch sponsored by Integra Capital rounded out the morning.
In the afternoon, the delegation visited Harbour Energy's London offices for discussions on strategies to strengthen international cooperation in energy transition and sustainable hydrocarbon exploration, before an optional visit to Chatham House.
Tuesday 4 March: Parliament and Argentina Day
The delegation began the day with a visit to the House of Commons, where discussions focused on the UK Parliament's approach to energy transition, renewable energy policy, decarbonisation, and long-term resource security — a fitting backdrop for the conversations that followed.
The centrepiece of the mission was Argentina Day, held at the Argentine Ambassador's Residence from midday. After a networking lunch, the formal programme featured presentations from both ambassadors and a set of focused briefings from the private sector. Eric Ritondale of PUENTE presented on Argentine provinces as engines of investment and growth, while Juan Martín Jovanovich of KPMG walked attendees through Argentina's Incentive Regime for Large Investments (RIGI) — the regulatory framework designed to attract and protect major foreign capital. Governors Figueroa and Weretilneck then made their case directly to an audience that included investment funds, development banks, sovereign wealth funds, energy companies, strategic consultancies and specialist media.
The key investment themes were: upstream oil and gas and LNG development linked to the Vaca Muerta shale formation; renewables, including wind, solar and hydropower in Neuquén and Río Negro; and the legal and regulatory frameworks underpinning foreign investment in both provinces.
Wednesday 5 March: BP and the British Museum
The final morning was hosted by BP at the British Museum, where the delegation was presented with bp's Energy Outlook — a long-range analysis of energy scenarios through to 2050, examining the risks and certainties of the global energy transition. It was a fitting close to a mission that had, over four days, placed Argentina's energy potential firmly within that global conversation.
Looking Ahead
The Argentina–UK Energy Trade Mission represented a significant step forward in the bilateral commercial relationship. By convening governors, ambassadors, investors and industry leaders in substantive, focused dialogue over several days, it created the conditions for partnerships and investments that will take shape in the months and years ahead.
The BACC is proud to have played a central role in organising this mission alongside BritCham Argentina, with the support of the Argentine Embassy and the British Embassy in Buenos Aires.
